FEE SCHEDULE:

The above fees do not include travel reimbursement, shipping, or meals and lodging.   Accommodations may be with a guild member.  No preferences, pets are fine.  I eat anything except Strawberries (allergy).


For special workshops for children go to Special for Kids.

A  materials fee may be required on classes where I provide materials and/or a bound handout.

In the case of Power Point digital presentations, I provide the computer and digital projector.

Most of these workshops can be combined or edited for your group's special needs. Content is adjusted for the allotted time available.  For the hands on workshops which require sewing machines, looms, warping equipment, I can provide much of it, if necessary, unless traveling by plane.

A SEWER'S PERSPECTIVE: EVOLUTION OF A HANDWEAVER

Daryl Lancaster, artist, teacher, hand-weaver, writer and professional dressmaker/designer with over 35 years experience will be discussing her views and her perspective on hand-woven clothing, recycled experiences and the creative process.  Daryl will talk about her adventurous journey over the years with hand-woven clothing showing slides and samples of her fabrics and garments.

COLOR and INSPIRATION

Translate color and inspiration into something wearable!  Based on the Color/Fabric Forecast Column from Handwoven Magazine, participants will experiment with palettes based on mood and theme using photos for inspiration and see illustrations of how to translate them into handwoven fabrics and ultimately a garment.

Daryl Lancaster will be presenting a lecture covering sett choices, finishing fabric, color and inspiration, fitting, and basic techniques for sewing with handwoven fabrics.  It is a whirlwind lecture, hold on to your seats!

INLAID TRANSPARENCY: THE MOORMAN TECHNIQUE

Explore the tapestry technique highlighted in Theo Moorman's book, Weaving as an Art Form.  This simple technique of inlay on a plain weave ground can be done on any basic 4 shaft loom.  Discussion of the technique, examples of the technique in finished tapestries, and an opportunity to experiment with the technique in a hands-on demonstration will all be covered.  Power Point digital presentation.

PERFECT FOR CONFERENCES!

 A SEWER'S PERSPECTIVE: INSTRUCTIONAL TOUR OF THE JURIED FASHION SHOW

An interactive exploration behind the "seams" of the garments from the Fashion Show.  You saw them on the runway, now see them up close and inside.  Participants will experience a technical critique of garments on display, seeing the inside finishing techniques as well as the outside appearance, and fit.  This kind of experience provides the participants with many ideas for finishing, what works and what doesn't.  A terrific "behind the seams" look allowing participants to view first hand, some of the choices used by experienced fiber artists.  A CONVERGENCE favorite.

NEW! PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR WORK

Often handweavers are rejected from exhibits because of the poor quality of their images.  Find out what works and what doesn't.  Even if you use a professional photographer, knowing what jurors are looking for will help improve the quality of your final presentation.  Using Power Point, the basics of photography, both film and digital will be discussed, as well as composition and lighting, and basic digital image manipulation using Photoshop Elements 4.0®Lots of images illustrating what NOT to do!

 WARP FAST: LEARN TO WARP MORE THAN ONE THREAD AT A TIME

Through a series of slides, students will learn about the fast method of sectional warping.  Explore the advantages and disadvantages of this production technique.  The AVL warping wheel will also be discussed.  In addition, use of the inexpensive rigid heddle warping paddle will be demonstrated. This device allows the weaver to chain warp up to 24 ends at a time.  Calculating warps for repeats will also be covered if time permits.

 CLOSURES

Do you avoid jackets because you don’t know how to close them? There is nothing like a beautifully done bound buttonhole to set your garment apart from the rest. Standard and triangular bound buttonholes will be covered.  Also demonstrated will be machine and hand-worked buttonholes, buttonhole facings, fabric cords for loop and button closures, ideas for buttons, and other suggestions for closing up those jacket and vest fronts.  Materials Fee

 HOW TO FIT COMMERCIAL PATTERNS

Do you know the difference between design ease and wearing ease or semi- fitted and very loose fitting garments (about 10")? Did you know that commercial pattern companies and ready-to-wear designers don’t use the same industry standard measurements? The mystery behind fitting patterns is unfolded right before your eyes! A lengthy discussion on using commercial patterns, taking proper measurements,  grading techniques, and ease requirements are all part of the agenda, along with common pattern alterations. Explore the possibilities before you, a discussion of fiber, texture, sett, weaving, and finishing handwoven fabric will be covered.  More importantly, we will address how to make decisions about what to weave and where to begin.  Few of us know how to listen for guidance from our materials and equipment. COLOR PLAY AND WARP DESIGN

Through a series of creative exercises, participants will learn to confidently place yarns of different colors and textures together to make beautiful warp combinations. This is a fun, hands-on class, and participants will be asked to bring a bag of assorted odds and ends of yarns to work with and to share with others. In addition, participants will learn to create palettes using Color-aid blocks and photographs.  Based on the Color/Fabric Forecast Column from Handwoven Magazine, participants will experiment with palettes based on mood using photos for inspiration and see illustrations of how to translate them into handwoven fabrics and ultimately a garment.

No weaving experience necessary!  The inkle loom is portable, easy to warp, easy to weave off, and makes beautiful belts and bands.  Daryl used it to trim her garments.  Every weaver should own one.  They are inexpensive and children as young as third grade can learn to use them.  Schacht type Inkle Looms and rug yarn will be provided.  Materials Fee

CUSTOM FIT AND FABULOUS: CREATE A SIMPLE UNSTRUCTURED JACKET PATTERN, CUSTOM FIT TO YOU  (1 day)

No more one-size-fits-all, or clothes from rectangles!  Using a time-tested classic unstructured jacket pattern, students will learn to custom fit for their individual figures.  Some simple flat pattern and drafting skills will be taught in this workshop.  Expect to leave with a finished pattern and directions to make a fabulous yet easy jacket from your hand-woven fabric.  Materials Fee

INKLE LOOM WEAVING (1 Day)

No weaving experience necessary!  The inkle loom is portable, easy to warp, easy to weave off, and makes beautiful belts and bands.  Daryl uses it to trim her garments.  Every weaver should own one.  They are inexpensive and children as young as third grade can learn to use them.  Schacht type Inkle Looms or Ashford Inklette Inkle Looms and yarn will be provided. 

Starting with a PowerPoint presentation, participants will learn to make heddles for the loom, follow a draft and warp the inkle loom.  Proper techniques for weaving a tight even band with good selvedges will be explained.  A more intermediate technique of Inkle Loom Pick-up for interesting design options will also be demonstrated.  Participants will be able to finish a small project by the end of the day.  Materials Fee

A WEARABLE EXTRAVAGANZA: Wrap Yourself in Clothing From You Own  Hands (5 DAYS)

This is a terrific class for those wanting to learn to sew clothing from their hand-woven or other special fabric, as well as for those more experienced students wanting polished and professional results.  Students will construct a basic unlined jacket (see photo right) custom fit to themselves while learning all sorts of inspiring techniques to make their garments reflect their creativity.  This class is designed to teach creativity as well as technique.  Materials Fee

FANTASTIC FITTED VEST (3 Days)

We all have drawers and boxes of bits of treasured fabrics, handwoven, felted, antique, samplers, and quilt fabrics.  Some are scraps from other projects, some are samples from workshops.  Some are finished projects that didn't work or don't fit anymore. And then there are all the scarves and placemats...  This is a workshop on taking what you don't know what to do with, and learning to piece it all together to make a wonderful lined vest, custom fit to you.  Fitting, garment construction, and piecing techniques for all types of fabric will be covered.  Anything goes here, it's a chance to get really carried away since all you have to lose are a few scraps!

YARDS AND YARDS: DESIGNING AND WEAVING HANDWOVEN YARDAGE (5 DAYS)

Learn to enjoy the "Joy of Hand-weaving". Improve your basic weaving skills and learn to work with the loom and create beautiful flawless yardage. This workshop will give participants a chance to design, warp, and weave 3-4 yards of plain weave fabric using mixed yarns of various colors and textures.
